Getting Started

A program designed to introduce young people to the pipes or drums begins in the fall.  One or more free introductory lessons may be offered.  For information about getting started at any time, please contact the Band Manager at the telephone number below.

Piping

Girls and boys choosing to play the pipes will initially need to acquire a practice chanter and a designated instructional text.  Band instructors or other private instructors can recommend sources for these items.  Ultimately, upon the recommendation of the individual instructor, bagpipes will be purchased.  This will be at the student's expense and the pipes will be the student's property.

Snare Drumming

Young people interested in snare (side) drumming will be asked to purchase a practice pad and a specific type of sticks.  The Band manager will assist with referral to a qualified instructor.  Upon the approval of the band's Chief Drumming Instructor, the student will be issued a snare drum, which will remain the property of the band.

Bass/Tenor Drumming

Boys and girls wishing to receive training in tenor or bass drumming should contact the Band Manager.  Initially, prospective bass/tenor players will need to receive training in rudimental percussion skills.  Arrangements for instruction outside of band rehearsal time will be made, and the student should be prepared to pay for these lessons.  Upon the approval of the band's Chief Drumming Instructor, the student will be issued a drum, which will remain the property of the band.
